Blondie and Dagwood
If you’re as old as me, you probably grew up reading the Blondie comic strip in the newspaper. If you’re a lot older than me, you might remember the radio comedy, Blondie, which began in 1939 and ran until 1950.
In 1938, Columbia Pictures released the film, Blondie, starring Arthur Lake as Dagwood Bumstead and Penny Singleton as his wife, Blondie. The film was a hit and spawned a long-running film series featuring 28 films. To promote the film, Singleton and Lake appeared on the Pepsodent radio program with Bob Hope. This led to a Blondie Radio Show, which was originally supposed to be a summer replacement for the Eddie Cantor Show, but Cantor did not return in the fall so Blondie continued in that slot.
For our version of the show, we found the script for an episode dated July 24, 1939, which was probably the fourth episode of the program.
Our cast included:
Dan Curtis: Narrator
Blondie: Sandy Leavitt
Dagwood: Kay Curtis
Happy Jack: Roger Martin
Appliance Salesperson (Lou Lou): Maddie Hibbard
